Termidor - preventative termite service

I am interested in hearing about the value of preventative termite services. I got a quote from exterminator to do Termidor termite service for $1,400. We have about 170 - 200 linear feet of perimeter. They would drill holes (where needed) and insert probe and pour chemical to kill termites.

As far as I know we have no termites in the house, but the area we live in is susceptible to termite damage. The cost of service is high, the warranty only covers retreatment and does not cover any damage that may occur if termites are found later. They cannot guarantee at this price the damage.

What do people know about Termidor and how effective the preventative treatment is? Has anyone spent the money on it who does not have any current problems? Is it worth it?

Termite treatment and service contract are well worth the expense to protect the investment in your home. Get references. Call two or three companies for inspection and estimate and warranty (read the fine print). The company should be licensed by the state or national agency in your area.

Termidor is a non-repellent termite control and usually comes with a 5-year warranty. According to the Dept. of Agriculture, non-repellent controls are proving themselves to be more effective than repellents because termites that tunnel into the treatment die. Repellent termiticides provide a chemical barrier that keeps termites from entering the structure. Termiticide repellent barrier is good for about five years.

"They cannot guarantee..." The idea is to provide a continuous barrier of repellent or non-repellent termite control, but in actual practice this can not always be achieved and there may be gaps in the barrier. Thus, it is important to go with a reputable, professional company and to maintain service contract. Just about all pest companies offer a "service guarantee" or "retreatment guarantee." They will retreat if termites show up. Repair warranties are very limited and often used as a marketing tool (read the fine print).
