fending off the creatures

Iíve heard somewhere, that depositing boric acid or borax or something similar (it was a long time ago) around perimeter of the room would help fending off ants and other creatures. I am remodeling in my bedroom and while installing a new floor thought it would be a perfect opportunity to do that.
Also which one of the above( if any is used for that purpose) is less toxic to humans and animals? Any ideas?

Thanks,

Boric acid is frequently recommended for insect control. To place boric acid around baseboards for long-term protection is questionable as effectiveness tends to break down where humidity is greater than 45%. The best control is to seal all entries into the home and to treat perimeter and foundation of the home on a regular basis with residual insecticide.
