Biting flies!

For the past 3 years at this time of year we get hundreds and hundreds of small biting flies in the backyard. They last for about a month until the temps get really cold. We don't have any trash in our backyard, it's in our shed. We do have a pool with a cover on top of it, not sure if the water on the cover attracts them.

We have 2 dogs and during this month if we let them outside for longer that 10 minutes they are covered with the flies. I pick up the dog mess as soon as they go so the yard is always clean.

Is there any way we can get rid of these flies?

If I had to guess what was attracting them I would say the pool because we've had the pool for 3 years and had these flies for 3 years.

The small black biting flies breed in water. Eliminating water source on pool cover may eliminate your problem. Avoid outdoor activity during peak biting times. If you must go outdoors wear long pants and sleeves and apply repellent like Deet. There are non-toxic bug repellents like BugN'Out for dogs. There are non-toxic larvaecides that can be put in standing water to halt breeding. There are propane insect foggers available for clearing outdoor areas of flying insect pests.

I do have the Bug N Out for the dogs. Those flies are pretty persistant.

At this point is it too late to halt the breeding in the pool cover water? Do you know what that non-toxic pesticide would be called or where I would purchase it?

Hi Nicole,

You don't say where you live so it would be difficult to determine just which type of biting flies you have. This site gives info on several different types of flies, where they breed and what you can do, if anything, to fight them.

I live in Rehoboth, Mass.

I tried that link, it doesn't seem to be working at the moment.

Nicole, sorry about that link. They do seem to have their problems, but do try it again. I did a google with the term:
biting flies + Massachusetts
and found more links. You can repeat the search. Here's a MA site.
