Rat Or Squirrel?? Help

I find Signs of Animals through out my home and I have never seen one. I find these severly aged Walnuts that are all decayed up sporaticaly from time to time in my home. My spare bedroom one day I vacuum and cleaned and went in there the next day and right there in the room was a nut. No human put it there,who did? I have a spare bathroom that is partially gutted and we do not use it except for storage until we can finish it off. I found Turds which are approximetly 1/2" long. Much bigger than a mouse. What it is it. We have barns and Chickens so I know there is rats out there and we have tons of trees and squirrels around and I occassionaly will hear scratching in the wall in the early evening around 5PM. I can't figure out where they are coming in. I home was built in the 18th century and is very large so it can be anywhere. Any guesses of what they are and how to rid them off?

 

A general rule of thumb is if you hear them at night they're rats if you hear them in the day they're squirrels.

Seal all holes larger than a dime and set traps baited with Slim Jims or Reeses

Thanks for your Reply. It is definetly in the Daytime. It is very quiet at night. I will try the bait if I can find the holes. Thanks
