Smells that don't go away

I have lived in my house for 14 years. There is a strong, putrid smell of dead organic (read: meaty-like) something in my coat closet. Walls that abut are a closet and fireplace.

This smell has stayed just as strong all this time. At first I thought it was a dead body, but I have extensive medical training and I know that eventually the carcus will dry out and smell will go away. I have read that mold does not smell like this...I know for a fact it something dead. Have cleaned and inspected everything short of tearing down the walls. Help!!

If chimney leaks, there could be wet insulation and decaying wood in closet wall.
