How do get rid of a rat in the duct? It's a crawl space and I don't know where it got in. I screened off the vents in the foundation 2 yrs ago and thats still intact. I know it's a rat cuz we were face to face thru the floor register this morning. My first thing is to make sure it can't push up the registers to actually enter the house..the kids and wife will freak-or worse.
Then what? Any suggestions?

I'd call an exterminator to make an inspection to determine possible entries and to assist with trapping and exclusion. Rats in ductwork pose health issues from feces and urine in ducts.

If you want to do it yourself I'd suggest finding some good poison to throw on food you can leave in the duct. Heavy, evil poison, since rats are resilient. But then you've got the problem of a decomposing rat in your heat ductwork. You'd have to find a way to sweep through the ductwork and either pull the dead rat actually into your house (make sure the wife and kids aren't there) or better yet push it out onto the street or yard.
Fun, fun stuff. Best of luck.
