Question Flies all year long

Last spring my wife and I remodeled our kitchen in our 100 year old house. We pulled down the origin plasterboard ceiling and replaced it with new material. We taped the seams completely but installed recessed pot lights in one section of the ceiling. Come fall, small flies began appearing in the kitchen. They are not very quick and seemed to be attracted to light. I have seen postings concerning cluster flies, but these do not fit the MO. These flies have continued to appear throughout the fall, winter, spring and now the summer months. They do not congregate around windows or our screen door. They are attracted to Swarsky?? crystals which hang from a small chandelier over our kitchen table. They are leaving little dots of reddish brown material on the crystals.

Swatting, fly traps, etc. reduce the population, but it has not gone away regardless of the time of year.

Help Please: what are they, where to they come from, and how do I eliminate them once and for all?

Hi Billwray,

Any plants growing in your kitchen area? I wonder if these could be wood gnats. Take a look at this site, especially the last one on the page.

Here's more pesky fly info.

You might want to consider getting a sample in a baggie to your local extension service for id.
