Interesting (new to me) bug. What is it?

This bug was sitting on one of my bird baths just now. I've never seen this before. Looks like an elongated ladybug.

Looks like a red milkweed beetle.

Thanks! I'm not familiar with Milkweed plants and didn't plant any. Wonder what it's doing around here? Guess it eats something else, too.

Around here the milkweed plant is considered a weed, never heard of anyone purposely planting them. While I've seen that bug - I don't know anything about them.

After doing a search on milkweed, I happened to notice a neighbor, a couple of doors down, has a milkweed plant growing (at least it looks like it). I guess it just stopped in my yard for a drink of water!

That's interesting, I didn't know there were many varieties of milkweed. I have always thought one particular plant I see was milkweed but I never recalled seeing it in blossom. I will pay attention in the future and may add a few from seed as I have some wet well shaded areas back along a small stream.
