Scratching noises in wall/ceiling

Hello all! New member. I just joined to ask about an incident last night. I sleep in an upstairs bedroom (right against the roof) and I woke up around 1am to the distinct sound of scratching. I traced the source of the noise to an upper corner of the upstairs bathroom. The bathroom is a dormer which would place the sound right near where the roof of the bathroom meets the peak of the main roof. It was a clearly audible, rhythmic scratching that sounded like it was right against the other side of the drywall. I checked outside today in the area where I heard it but saw no visible evidence of any animal activity. Last night was the first time I ever experienced this. I guess my point is that it kind of freaked me out and I'm hoping it was just a critter on the roof that moved on. Is it possible it was just a one time occurrence? Hopefully it doesn't happen again. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Welcome to the forums.

From your description..... it sounds like you have mice.
You're not going to see much outside. They can squeeze into a house almost anywhere. Is there any attic access where you could set a few mice traps ?

I agree, look for their droppings. I'd set out traps near where you heard the noise and/or see their droppings. Mice don't normally leave on their own.
