Need Pro Tip: DIY Outdoor Spraying
Just got off the phone with a local pest control company today. They said they have a "guardian" package that includes an exterminator coming out to our home once a quarter, at which time they will spray all the way around the house (this includes the doors/window frames, three feet up the foundation and up to ten feet out to any walkways), plus put down chemicals/traps inside for added protection.
The price was $150 for the first visit and then about $125 quarterly each visit after that. After seeing that this simply isn't something in my families budget at this time (but still desperately needing to manage our bug problem at home), I realized that with a little advice from you all and some effort on my part, I should totally be able to mange this myself.
Can any pro exterminators here recommend the good stuff I can use myself once a quarter to deal with things like ants, spider, stink bugs etc (all the things the local pest control people said they guard against). Also, what is the best stuff for managing things on the inside as well. I've had ant traps before, but I assume there is something a little more sophisticated.
I'm wiling to spend some money on the really good pro level chemicals as long as I can do it myself after that.

Two that I like for crawling insects, interior and exterior, are the Active Ingredients: Bifenthrin, Deltamethrin. They come under various brand names, but look for them as the Active Ingredients part of the label. These are concentrates that you mix with water.
Bifenthrin granules are good for the exterior perimeter for crawling insects, though you should still use water based spray for soffits, eaves, window frames, etc.
Bifenthrin is the better of the two for ants, but Delta will be better for spiders though both are very adequate for pest control in general, excluding termites.
The smaller species of ants will readily accept the gel baits, as well. Hope this helps.

I'm not a pro on this, but I started using this a few years ago and I can really tell the difference when I go too long, usually more than a couple months. It contains the Bifenthrin.
Picked up a cheap sprayer, spray about 2' spread up the wall and away from the building (4' total). Works excellent, haven't used it inside, though supposedly you can. I can see the dead critters after they crawl in my garage. 1 bottle lasts me almost a year, easy to mix as it has a measuring gauge built in to the bottle.

Edit: I also bought some bait traps and bait for rats when I stopped my service. All in for about $80, which lasted me a year, then about $30/year for resupply. This compared to $80 every 2 months. Easy decision, and pretty much the same stuff they were using (rat traps and bait exactly the same).
