Exclamation Rat in the Washing Machine

A few days ago I went out to the garage to change a load of laundry, opened the lid and found a rat sitting on the wet clothes. He bolted between a gap between the drum and the backing of the machine. I've set several snap traps with peanut butter with no luck, but if I do a load of laundry he's in the washing machine pretty quick (once within 5 minutes). I think he's after the water but I admit I don't know much about rat motivation. There's no food in the garage. Any thoughts on how I can get rid of this rat?

That's crazy! I've never seen a situation like that! Try cooked bacon in the traps. The odor and moisture should be too much for him to resist. The pro's that do a lot of trapping always suggest multiple traps; sounds like you're doing that.

Quick lesson: Rats are neophobic, meaning they fear or are shy of new things. Mice don't care; that's why they're easier to catch. A good trapping strategy would be to place some bacon that isn't on a trap to make him feel comfortable with the baited traps, or bait traps with bacon but don't set them. Let him eat off the unset traps, then set them and whamo.

On the other hand, since he's comfortable inside the machine, I'd consider setting a baited trap inside the machine.
