Large Butterfly?

Just noticed this large insect flying around our patio in Clearwater Florida. It appears to have about a 6-inch wingspan. Since only one has been seen this is not really a pest. However, several would be a pest.

Anyone know what this is or anything about them. Just curious at this point.

Thanks,

Harv

I think it's actually a moth. A erebid moth (Ascalapha odorata), commonly known as the 'black witch', a large bat-shaped, dark-colored nocturnal moth.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was really curious since I've never seen this before.

There's also another similar looking moth that is somewhat common - The Tobacco Hornworm Moth

Don't those migrate to Mexico or South America??? Or am I getting them crossed up with another beast?
