I am buying a home approx 45 years old. The insulation in the unfinished attic appears brown and old. Would it benefit me to add new insulation in between the joists to increase insulation of home? Any suggestions on type of insulation?

Yes, you can add insulation, and yes it will help. The kind is really up to you. You can get sacks of loose insulation and dump between your joists, or get rolled and place the strips between your joist. Don't take the old insulation out, leave it there. Good Luck
