insulation

Insulating my attic with R-30 and where the rafters meet the ceiling plates is very short. Obviously you want to get the insulation in there but I dont want to cut off air exchange between soffit and ridge vents. With R-30 (10"-12") height it is hard. What is the best method? Shave off some fiberglass, compress it, etc. Please enlighten me to the best method. I dont believe baffles will work because I will have areas that are not insulated and allow living space heat upwards. Thanks.

My house has cardboard pieces that are made for this exact purpose. They create an inch gap and are about a foot long. You can pick them up at Home Depot and they are very cheap.

What I have done right now is use insulation holders (metal rods) to compress the ends of the insulation slightly to allow free air space.
