installing insulation in walls

My question is wether to staple the tabs on bats to the front or the sides of the studs? If you are going to glue the drywall to the studs then you would only have the paper to glue it to?

Confused!

Stapling batts

If you staple to the sides of the studs you will create an air space, and also compress the fiberglass, losing a certain percentage of the R value. Proper installation is stapling to the stud face. Doesn't your code require that drywall be nailed or screwed?
