foil-faced insulation

What benefits does foil-faced fiberglass insulation have over craft-faced. I am insulation several spaces in my house including above-ground portion of walls in my basement.

Foil acts as a vapor barrier and as a radiant barrier. Assuming your main concern is winter heating, the foil should face the room and seams should be taped to form a continuous vapor barrier. This will prevent condensation in the walls. As a radiant barrier the foil will reflect radiant heat energy back into the room making it feel comfortable at a lower thermostat setting.

I personally think foil should be more popular than it is but all new construction around here seems to use unfaced fiberglass batts and a poly vapor barrier. Maybe there is a downside to foil that I am not aware of.
