vapor barrier

I am insulating our 3rd floor. Is 4 mil plastic sufficient for the vapor barrier, or should I use 6 mil. Also, I will have several joints in the vapor barrier, will the stapling be good enough,or do I need to tape the joints. If tape, use duct tape? The insulation I put up is paper backed, do I need to perforate the paper-don't want double vapor barrier-correct?

As long as the two vapor barriers are on the same side of the insulation and there isn't a big gap between them, then it's okay. 6 mil would be better and you can staple it provided the two overlap each other, but you could use 4 mil if you wanted.
