Asbestos removal

Like another member, I have an old gravity head furnace (looks like an octopus) with asbestos covered ducts. THe covering is very, very thin, maybe 1/16". I'm remodeling, and the furnace has to come out, but the GC won't do it (it's illegal for him to do so here in NY). However, I have gone through the state listing of licensed abatement contractors, and there's no one within a very long distance who can/will do this for me. SO, I have to do it myself, which amounts to detaching the ducts from the furnace and basement ceiling.

I've tried to educate myself on the safest procedures. I've been told to get the stuff very wet, wear a respirator with special filters, wear a jump suit and goggles. And I realize it's important to keep the stuff from becoming airborn. But does anyone know of where I can get a document detailing the safe procedures? So far I haven't come up with much.

Thanks,
Reg

Try the New York State Department of Labor. They regulate asbestos removal in NY.

State Office Building No. 12, Albany, NY 12240 at (518) 457-1255.
