Attic insulation.....

How important is a vapor barrior in the attic?I plan on adding insulation the the existing blown/batt insulation. There is no vapor barrior at all.Should I remove exsisting insulation and put some down with a vapor barrior. Its been like this for about 18+ years.I live in South Carolina if that makes a difference.

According to everyone here, it is important. I had to paint my ceilings with an oil-based primer and then with standard ceiling white, because I couldn't get underneath my walk-up attic.

Still, I noticed how much moisture still gets into the attic on a hot summer day, even with a vapour barrier. When I was ripping off old cedar shakes underneath an asphalt shingle layer in July, they were not only broiling hot, but also soaked damp with vapour. It was amazing.
