How can I add insulation to attic?
greetings-
I have what is probably a classic attic insulation problem. 2x6 joists, 16" on center, and probably R-11 rolled batts up there.
I live in central N.J., and figure I should bump that up to R-39 or so. Should I just roll unsurfaced batts on top of existing? The problem I see here is, about half the attic has floorboards for storage- if I cram extra insulation under there won't compressing it take away R- value? In short, how can I add R value in limited space?
Thanks Very Much for your input,
J.

I had the same problem and solved it by taking up the floor, adding 2x8s to run crosswise of the existing ceiling joists and then placing R-25 within the new extension joists. Then put the floor back down. Of course you would only need to do this where you want the attic space floored, else you just roll out additional insulation.
