Insulation in Ceiling

Would like to find out if there are any benifits to putting insulation between the joists in my basement ceiling before finishing off with a drop ceiling.

Thanks in advance!

Insulation in Ceiling

You do not need insulation in the basement ceiling.

Fiberglass may provide some minor sound proofing. After many inspections of damaged homes in New Orleans, it is surprisingly very effective in holding moisture and removing ceilings.

Don't use it if you don't need it - it makes everything much simpler. What is you have sweating or a minor leak?

It does nothing for insulating purposes as the space on either side is heated. However, it does help with sound proofing. If you are puttting a home theatre or stereo system in the basement, then I recommend it.

Is the basement heated or unheated?
Dirt floor or slab?
Finished basement or unfinished?
How old is the building?

Thank you Dick and EM.

Hey Doug,

The Basement floor is concrete slab but I built it up with:

1. 6 mil poly
2. 2x4s laid flat with 1.5 inch rigid foam insulation between
3. 3/4 inch plywood on top

I am finishing it with 2x4 framing then will insulate with R-13. then 1/2 inch Sheetrock. I am planning on putting a drop ceiling in.

Then house is almost 5 years old.

Thanks for your help
