We are finishing our basement in our 50 plus year old house with cinderblock walls/concrete floors. So far we have put up plastic sheeting against the cinder block which is held in place by the 2 x 4 framing. Our plan is to complete the wiring and put the unfaced batt insulation between the studs to be covered by another sheet of plastic sheeting and then drywall. This is when I began hearing that this may not be the best technique with regard to condenstion and possible mold formation. I have seen suggestions that the plastic sheeting be applied to the cinder block with glue or roofing cement/tar. Now I am wondering if we've made a big mistake. We have never seen water in the basement however there have been yellow (kind of rusty) splotchy stains that appeared on the cinder block in the middle of the walls a couple years after painting with a sealing paint. We suspect that the lack of gutters was probably the problem (lots of roof drainage in these areas) there and have installed gutters so we don't expect that to be a problem again. Are we making a mistake in the way we put up plastic sheeting against the cinder block, 2 x 4 studs, and the planned unfaced batt insulation followed by another plastic sheet and finally drywall. The basement is almost entirely below grade. I guess my main question is should we have skipped the plastic sheeting against the cinder block walls, or should it have been applied with some sort of glue/cement? Central Minnesota. Trying to find a product online and all i get are the large scale foam options for insulating full rooms walls etc. Is there a product that you can use to temporarily fill smaller areas like 6 inches, ie a temp exhaust fan for the basement and semi pernament like the hole made by previous owners in old floor to 2nd floor at plumbing pipes. Key of course it when its time to remove that it crumble relatively easily and doesnt have to be hacked at to remove. And of course doesnt bond like glue pernamently to the wood. Am I asking for too much?
