second opinion needed re. attic ventilation

i am working with a very well respected energy star contractor on improving the efficiency our our 100+ year old home.

he will be installing a furnace and new duct work.

I am going to add 6"- 9" of blown in cellulose in our attic. the contractor told me that if you hard pack the insulation into the eaves, you do not need to worry about ventilation from the sofit to the ridge vent. He said that good insulation would not allow for the heat exchange that causes the condensation in the first place. This seems to contradict what i have read in other places.

does this sound right/wrong to any of you?

There are 2 schools of thought... one is more ventilation is better, the other is no ventilation is better. Even experts can't agree, so...
