Getting ready for the winter

This will be my first winter in my current place and I'm a bit worried about it getting cold.

Obviously I was fine throughout the summer but a few cold days recently have left me fearing the cold months ahead.

I'm looking for a few cheap ways to try and make sure I'm not wasting too much on my heating to warm myself up. What could you recommend? What are the most common areas that heat escapes/cold gets in?
