Insulation questions??
I am building a shop in my 2nd garage. I will be heating it when I am working in it (50%) and am planning on always keeping it above freezing. I live in north central WI. The shop will be 35'x18' with 10' ceiling. The roof trusses have 2x6 cords now so a R19 will work as is but am wondering if it is worth the money to drop frame the ceiling with 2x6s and get it to an R38? the 3 exterior walls will be insulated with R13 and the one interior either R13 or 19, again is it worth building the interior wall (otherside of wall is always unheated) with 2x6s and getting an R19 when the exterior are 2x4 and will be R13? Anyone have any ideas??
Thanks,
Pete
Thanks,
Pete

Pete, welcome to the forums! Over the garage, I would install your R19 between the joisting, and if you want more, install batts across your existing insulation. I would not drop frame it for insulation properties. Your house is most likely R13 if the garage is, so if it is staying toasty, there would be no reason except for a poor seal from the outside to cause it to be different. What type heat will you install?

Hi Chandler.
Thanks for your reply. This is a 2nd garage and unfinished inside as of yet. the reason I was thinking of drop framing was only because the top is currently used for storage. Heat source is going to be propane either a wall mount furnace or a modine type ceiling mount. The exterior walls of my home are 2x6 and R19 but as mentioned this is a second garage and not attached to the home.
