Insulating a stone chimney in vaulted ceiling with no attic pass thru...

What's the proper procedure to insulate the stone that passes thru a vaulted finished ceiling? Can it be spray foamed directly to stone in 2X12 rafter chases if properly vented on top deck? Any one know? The stone radiates a lot of heat into this area and top deck within a two foot perimeter. Thanks!

Can you include a picture? There should be a double rafter and the chimney should have headers across the space that is devoted to the stone work. If there is a gap there it should be a few inches but I am not totally sure what your objective is. If the stone is radiating heat then insulating it is going to drive the heat up to a portion of the chimney above the roof plane where it will dissipate to the outdoors. You could put a piece of mill finish aluminum or even aluminum foil on the face of the wood adjacent to the stone and it will radiate the heat back to the stone.
