Help insulating brick house that has plasterboard and drywall

Please help, I have no clue what kind of set up this old house has. I was trying to insert insulation but when I opened up the house, there was no 2x4 wooden frame to install the insulation.
The set up in the house
1) Brick
2) 1/2 inch wood
3) Plasterboard
4) 1/2 inch wood
5) Drywall
Do I need to break it down to the brick, attach on polyisocyanurate rigid foam insulation board, build new wood frame and than install the insulation?
or is there a way for me to just attach a foam board insulation on the plasterboard and patch it up with dry wall? We are trying to save money so trying to to figure out the best route. Please help
