Converting Garage to Den - Need Insulation Advice
#1
My garage already has drywall (when house was built 5-yrs ago). There is no insulation on these exterior walls. What is the best way for me to approach this with cost in mind. There are 3 exterior walls each about 20-21ft in length.
Should I:
Use blown in insulation to minimize drywall replacement/work
(or)
Rip all existing drywall out and insulate then install new drywall.
(or)
any other suggestions.
Thanks for any advice.

I would blow cellulose into the walls, or have it done. Should take about 4 hours, and you would only have about 50 small, plugged holes to patch. Ripping out all of the sheetrock and replacing it, taping it, texturing, then painting would take you at least a week.

Leaving the existing sheetrock in place and blowing cellulose into the walls will save you time and money, and give you better insulation. My suggestion is to find a contractor who can blow the walls and have them done. The machines you rent or borrow from Home Depot, although slow, are designed to insulate attics. Blowing walls is tricky. You have to be very familiar with your equipment to know when the wall cavity is full, but not over-full. Anybody can blow an attic -- they can see what they are doing. blowing insulation into a blind cavity, and doing it right, now that takes practice!!
