insulating around chimney

What type of insulation should I use to insulate around my chimney in the attic? I burn wood so the chimney gets quite warm. I want to insulate this space so iI don't lose all that heat but, I want to do it so it is not a fire hazard.

If your trying to block off the gap from the attic area... You can use unfaced mineral wool, manufactured by Owens Corning, Roxul or Thermo Fibre.... This product is used to block off many openings and penetrations to restore the 1 hour fire rating as well as insulate at the same time... You may have to go to a Insulation wholesale company rather than a home depot type store... If you cant find it there usually you can find it a a plumbing wholesale supply house or an electrical supply house, both those trades use this product to close off penetrations they create when installing there products..

It is very itchy though, where long sleeves, gloves and a breathing mask when installing...

Good Luck

Jim
