Attic Design

1. I was adding another layer of insulation in my attic when I noticed that at each end the walls are made of foam board on the inside and vinyl siding directly on the exterior. I am somwhat new to the home owning arena. Is this normal??? I thought plywood is needed to make the structure sound.

2. My home was built in 1998 and it uses 2x4 construction throughout the attic including the floor of the attic. Is this normal??

3. In addition I noticed attic vents on each of the 2 ends of the structure from the outside. When I entered the attic there were no sign of the vents. I found that the foam board was covering them up. I cut through the foam board to reveal the screened attic vents. I hope this was correct??

The house is a 2 story colonial built on a slab.
Please help!

1. yes, you will also see besides the foam, bracing that runs diagonally across the vertical studs. That is where your strength comes from.

2. not uncommon

3. good idea

do you have soffit vents front and rear, if so make sure you dont block them when adding new insulation.

Good Luck

Jim
