Question Insulating Recessed Lights?

We have a terrible draft that comes from our recessed lights in the family room. How can we insulate them? Can I use caulk, or will that be a problem with the heat of the lights? Thanks!

recessed lights

I have IC rated lights that also have a draft problem, even with the insualtion packed around it. I have been trying to find out if I can "seal" the holes on the outer can, along with caulking around the underside next to the interior ceiling, and pack insulation back around it. I found one place that sells an "insulated, draft free top hat", but it looks cheesey. Any other ideas, good or bad?

You can build a cage over your recessed lights with chicken wire, and cover these with insulation, assuming you have access from the attic to these areas. Leave a minimum of 6 " to a foot of clearance all the way around and above the light fixture.

Good luck
