Angry Dead Maple Tree!

Need advice. Half way through last summer my 50 foot Maple tree lost all it's leaves and I thought nothing of it. But this spring, it didn't come back. No buds and every limb I look at it dry to the core. So what I need advice on is after I cut it down and left with the stump, what is my best plan of attack to rip out the roots? An architect I work for once told me that the root system is as big as the widest branch. So if anyone has any ideas, please do tell. Thanks!

Usually, a stump grinder is used to remove the stump and the largest parts of the roots right at the stump. You could dig the stump out, but a 50' tree will leave a considerable stump. You could rent a backhoe or skidsteer and remove the stump, but hiring someone to do this may be a better course of action. The remaining roots are usually left in the ground to decay over time.

Hope this helps.
