Smile silver maple near basement

I have a silver maple about 15 feet from the house. The trunk is about 12 in in diameter and there have been branches over the house for years. I am worried about the roots messing up the basement wall. I've heard the roots go out as far as the branches. I like the tree and would like to keep it, but i also do not want it to harm my basement. Any info or suggestions would be appreciated.

Ordinarily, tree roots get into sewer lines or heave concrete. I would not be inclined to expect them to penetrate the wall of the basement. You could excavate 18 inches and install landscape fabric to keep the roots away, if you wanted some form of reassurance. Most all of the roots are in the first 18 inches of soil.
