When to trim bushes?

I live in Minnesota and I was curious when is it a good time to trim the bushes around my yard. All of my bushes are non-evergreen and none of them form a hedge. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Flowering bushes are usually pruned after they bloom. Usually early bloomers bloom on last year's growth. Do not prune in winter or spring because you will cut away flower buds. Forsythia, honeysuckle, lilac, magnolia and azaleas are early bloomers. Older shrubs can be thinned by removing largest branches at the base of plant.

Late bloomers usually bloom on new growth. These are best pruned when dormant in late winter or early spring before the buds become green. Crape myrtle, spreading euonymus, hibiscus, and hydrangea are late bloomers. Shrubs that bloom on new growth are best left alone for two or three years to allow them to develop strong central branches. Then prune annualy, pruning back new shoots to the last one or two buds of last year's growth. This will make for a fuller, thicker bush. Older branches can be removed at their base.

Identify the types of bushes you have to make sure you give them proper care. The best time to prune depends on the type of shrub.
