Plants and Trees for Privacy

I am working on redoing my backyard. I am looking for guidance on a adding plants along the fence line that will enhance privacy as well as add value to the house. What are some of the trees/plants that could do this? (I'm in the Houston area.)

In addition to deciding what grows well in your area, you will need to consider how high and how dense you want the privacy. You will also need something that will survive in your particular sites conditions--soil type, drainage, sunlight. Driving around your neighborhood might give you a clue as to what generally does well where you live. You can consult with your local Dept. of Agriculture Extension Agent for a list of recommended trees and shrubs in your area. You will need to do some research about their growing needs as well as growing habits in order to narrow down your selection.
