In ground sprinker question

I want to move a sprinker head a few feet to expand a flower bed. I've replaced/heighted heads before - that's not a problem. My system is old...the heads are twice the size of today's units. My question is - What's the probability I'll be dealing with PVC pipe vs hose, since the system is so old. I know the only way to really tell is to dig, but I'm seeking thoughts beforehand.

Moving sprinkler heads

Husker,
My system is old too but I found out what type of underground piping I had by looking in the plastic valve box where the water line came out of the foundation. If you don't have this box with the removeable lid, then you will have to dig. In either case, whether it is PVC or flexible pipe you will have to cut and splice a section of line in including the riser and new sprinkler head.
