Pine trees killing grass?

I have a row of about 7 pine trees (maybe 15-20ft tall) that run along my property line. The ground is primarily bare under these trees. I want to plant grass but I am afraid it will die as it has in the past. Should I be using a certain kind of grass? I live in RI and URI formulated a grass for this area which is what I've been using but I'm wondering if I should use grass for shaded areas or if there is another grass I should use.

I don't have pine trees, but I've heard that putting lime down on the ground a few times per year will prevent the needles from killing the grass.

Tree roots compete with grass for moisture. Mulching under the tree line is recommended.
