crape myrtle in northern nj?

I've tried looking into this a few times, and found some planting guides that show our zone to be suitable for a crape myrtle. However, I've never seen any at local nurseries, making me think this tree can't withstand our winters.

There are some cultivars that can survive zone 6. Some can be killed to the ground in zone 7 if the winter is hard enough. I would try some searching online or at the library to identify cultivars suitable for your area and see about ordering one. They do poorly unless in almost full sun. Well, they grow but don't flower well. Here is an informative discussion of the different cultivars.

Hope this helps.
