Preventing log rot

We recently cut down a number of old cedar trees that were nearing end of life (according to the arborist). After trimming off the branches, we wanted to use the trees as a border around the kids playset. Was just going to embed them slightly in the ground.

Is there anything I should do to treat the cut trees so that they won't rot?

Any thoughts / watchouts on anchoring the cut trees to the ground?

Thanks
