Yes, because carpenter ants prefer dead and damp woods to build their nests.

I thought higher end mulch "unlike gas station mulch" was treaeted for such things esspecially termites.

Whether you use wood mulch or not, carpenter ants are everywhere. Exclusion from the home is the best control. Seal all nooks and crannies where they can enter the structure, and seal around where pipes and wires enter. Cut any overhanging tree branches above your home. Address any moisture issues, leaky pipes. A regular perimeter residual insecticide treatment of foundation, mulch, and soil along the foundation tends to keep most insects and their predators at bay. Treated mulches are more expensive, and some gardeners report ill effects on shrubs and other plants.
