Our new property has huge trees on it - mostly elms and pines. On some of the elm trees, on one side, the bark has fallen off in a large square shape. The trees are still alive - we want to know how to keep them alive. Any idea what causes this and what can be done?

You might try contacting your local county extension agency (if you have one.) They sometimes can answer questions about trees in their area. Or call an arborist, that will cost you some money, but well worth the investment I would think. Landscaping around a house adds a considerable amount of value if you are concerned about spending the money. A couple big trees on a lot can easily add $10,000 to the value of your property! I didn't get my name for nothin'.....good luck! treewoman
