Light pruning in early spring before they leaf out (late Feb or March) and Heavy pruning in late fall and winter.

best time of year to prune flowering crab apple trees

You will do them no harm prunning the shaggy lower growth now or practically anytime. One of the best times to prune many trees (yes there are exceptions) is when you have the time and inclination. Having managed a landscape/garden center many years ago I have heared many absolutes about horticultural matters, often from quite experienced gardeners. The remarkable thing is often their absolutes were 180 degrees apart.. Point is, in the world of green and growing there are many different ways to skin the proverbial horticultural cat successfully. I wish you well, 38 years in the business and still learning.. Greensboro_man
