Red Lava Rocks fade to pink in the sun ?!?

We put down some red lava rocks 2 nights ago (landscaping stones under some bushes), and out of the bags they looked great - nice dark, rich, red color.

Just one day later - after sitting in the sun, I guess - they dramatically changed color. The rocks are noticably different now - clearly more pink than red. Getting them wet restores the color, but that doesn't do us much good.

I never would've bought pink rocks - they look horrible with our brown house. I realize rocks look differently when dry, but this is just too extreme.

Any idea what can be done? Is there any way to restore the red color permanently?

It is possible that your rock were artificially colored. If have never heard about it before, but considering the freight cost, it might be cheaper to color some rock that were 500 to 1000 miles closer.

If it was real red lava rock, it would have been exposed to the sun and air for years or millions of years. The material that normally colors natuaral rock red is iron oxide in some form or other. Iron oxide is one of the most U-V resistant materials there is.

Maybe a geologist could shed some light on this.

Another thought -

You may have gotten some lava rock that had fines (dust) that held moisture and went back to its natural lighter color when it dried out from the sun.
