Question flagstone mortar

I laid flagstone for a walkway and I wonder what to use as a mortar compound to keep sand and small pebbles in place?

Did you mortar the flagstone to a cement base or did you lay the pieces on a bed of sand or crushed limestone/decomposed granite? If you mortared to a cement base, you should just use cement as the grout between the flagstone pieces. If you laid the pieces on a bed of sand or some kind of decomposed granite or something like that, you could place top soil in-between the stones and plant Irish Moss or some kind of ground cover for a nice clean look or just use sand or small gravel as the filler between the flagstones. I don't think there is anything you can do to prevent sand or pebbles from getting knocked out of the spaces in-between the flagstone. One way is to make sure those spaces are not real wide ...make the spaces more narrow in-between each stone.
