Yard flooded after rains-rerouting water
After rains it seems as if rivers of water flood into our yard, and then settle between our property and the neighbors.Sometimes the water can sit for a few days.I don't mind it enough to spend a lot of money on regrading/drain pipes out to the front yard ditch. I had to spend a lot building up the septic area,so that it would not flood with every rain. I have added some raised flower beds in the less flood prone areas, and the water travels around them.
I would like to reroute the main *rain* river in the back of the yard,by shortening its zig zag path across the yard. According to the neighbor the water situation has been this way for years. We found out about the flooding 8 months into owning the property.
Can I create a new path for the water to travel,or is this something my neighbor could complain about? The water would still flood between our properties, but rerouting might lessen the wet spots all across the yard. I was thinking of creating a dry river bed/ditch with gravel.
Also, I would add water loving plants/trees to help soak up some water. The yard at this time is grass, weeds, fill dirt, and a few dying trees(carpenter ants).
So could the neighbor complain if I reroute the water? We are in Ohio.

Normally, you can do landscaping in your yard as long as you do not change where the water from your property goes. You shoild be able to change the route as long as you are not adding water to your neighbors property.
One minor exception would be the extreme where you have enough water and slope to shoot onto the property where it would cause erosion.
It would be best to let your neighbor know what you are planning on doing before you do it.

Hi Mattemma,
It is a misconception that water tolerant or water loving plants soak up water. You may find these links helpful.
