will they grow

I just bought a couple of pear trees [fruit] from Lowes and when I planted them all the dirt fell off of the 'root ball' revealing no roots just 2 nubs about the size of my fingers. Both trees were this way.

I know Lowes garuntees their plants/trees for 1 year but after I dug the holes and all the other work involved in getting them to grow, I'd like some reassurance that they won't up and die anyway.

Anyone else plant fruit trees? especially with no root structure?

Probably the only guarantee is that they will not grow or will not grow well. Take them back and get your money back.

We recieved two peach trees that were shipped from CA in a bare root state. I stuck them in a bucket full of water for about a week to make sure they were well hydrated before planting. They developed some very fine hair-like roots in that time and have wintered over well this year-- Probably o fruit for a few more years, but they look healthy even after a windy, icy winter.

Just a caveat here. Soaking in water for a week is often too long for most plants. Overnight should be sufficient.

bareroot stock is very different then having a container plant and all the soil and roots falling off around it.

your pear tree is probably severely damaged and probably won't live, but again I'd wait til spring to see if it blooms....
