Ground cover

I just moved into this house a year ago, in my front yard, I have two large, old maple trees. Unfortunately they don't allow enough sun through to allow grass to grow and I've tried shade mixes of grass. I thinking of getting a load of new soil and planting some ground cover, we live in a zone 6 planting area and I'd like to have some color too...anyone have any ideas?

Although there are ground covers that grow in shade, you will likely not have much success trying to grow anything beneath the shallow rooted maples because the roots will be competing for moisture and nutrients. Piling soil over the roots of trees can smother the roots. Mulching the areas around trees is recommended. 3-4" of mulch and do not let it touch the trunk.
