Can I use old roof shingles under my porch?

Can I use old roof shingles under my porch? We build a new covered porch and had to replace the roof. Instead of taking the old shingles to the dump and buying rock to put under my porch - can I just use the old shingles as ground cover. You will not be able to see them. I do not know if they might leach something.

Welcome to the forums!

I've used a few scrap shingles in place of mulch to keep grass/weeds from growing under a porch/deck but I don't know about using a lot of it. How big is your porch? How much shingles off of your roof? compared to the size of your porch.

Most shingles are made of petroleum products so I assume it could affect the ground some. Is there a well or plantings near the porch?
