Sprinkler Head Removal

I am trying to repair my sprinkler system which has old brass heads. I would like to remove them by unscrewing them from their male elbow. Unfortunately due to their age it is extremely difficult to turn them out of their sockets. Are there any tools or techniques to help me remove them? I am trying to avoid cutting the pipes or removing the clamps. Thanks for the advice in advance!

A pipe wrench around the base af o sprinkler is a good thing to do. Sometimes a couple shots of wd-40 helps. They do have such thing as a sprinkler wrench, it should be avaliable at home depot.
