Suggestions for the front out my house? (6*40 feet of trees taken out)

Just bought a new house with some ugly trees/bushes in the front. The area is around 6*40. Rather than put sod down...are there any suggestions for what would look nice?

Rocks? Gravel?

Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Hi Runaway,

Congratulations on your new home! How about some pictures? Without knowing the style and colors of the house it would be impossible to say what to do.

If you want advice for plant material then knowing where you live, your plant hardiness zone, sun conditions and height and width of area plants can grow in would be necessary. If you aren't sure of your hardiness zone you can check it here.

PICS - Landscape ? - Design for path way down to river

We just moved to a wonderful place in the upper peninsula of MI. We have a great view overlooking a river and a bluff on the other side of the river. Our house sits on a hill and is about 170 yards from the river. Today, there is no landscaping down to the river or at the river. Our goal is to make a landscaped path way with a park setting(fire pit, chairs, etc.) down by the river. I have some good ideas for the park area but am struggling to figure out a good path way down to the river. I would really like to keep the path way low maintainence. Since the path is so long, Im not sure a stoned path way is an option due to cost... but am open to hearing ideas. If you have any ideas or pictures, please let me know as I am really struggling. Replace Wooden Retaining Wall

The wooden retaining wall (20ft wide x 4ft high) in my front yard is starting to show its age. I'm planning to replace it with the easy to install retaining wall block system. The most difficult part of the project, I think, is dismantling the old wooden wall. Question - Would it be ok if I leave the old wooden wall, as is, and install the retaining wall blocks in front of it and fill the gaps between the old and the new wall with aggregate and soil?
